Looked at that Taco we discussed .

It’s a 2001 with 321k miles. S ome rust bubbling in the rockers, bubbling in the tailgate, and the bumpers are rough. The frame has flaking going on, but looks/seems solid yet. The inside was in pretty nice shape considering the mileage.

I was only able to grab a couple pics:

If a late model Toyota has rust on the body, run. The frame is already gone. The rails rust from the inside out, did you look on the inboard side of the frame where the front leaf spring attachments are?

This was the frame of one of the cleanest 3rd gen 4Runners I’ve ever seen when I was looking two years ago:

I actually did crawl under it. The frame has some flaking, but nothing like that. It looked to have many years of service in it yet.

I’d be really surprised, though it’s possible that it was coated or even replaced when the whole recall thing was going on . You can check the VIN on Toyota’s site and see if any of the frame recalls were done. Bring a ball peen hammer next time and give it a couple taps. I use my tungsten wedding band and it’s just as good as small hammer when looking for rust... if the metal doesn’t “ring” it’s garbage.

Toyota people are crazy. “Just broken in!” “Bargain price of $8500!”

Don’t really care to check it further.

Zoid and I were talking about it yesterday, so I stopped and grabbed some info/pics/gave a quick once over.

If he was interested in making the trip I would look it over further.

Yes. That just ensures it makes it to that sort of mileage over its first two decades of life. After that though...

If you applied the same logic as T100 and Tacoma’s to similarly aged Camry then they’d be ridiculous money too...but no-one is that silly. And yet they are all Toyota...and can even share engines...
